Meghan Markle’s dig at Kate backfires as friend rebukes hugging swipe

Meghan Markle saw her claims that Prince William and Kate, the Princess of Wales were too formal to hug her rebuked as a friend of the Princess spoke out in her defense. The Duchess of Sussex noted in the Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan the couple did not greet her with a hug when they met for the first time, quipping that hugging is “jarring” for many Britons. But one week on since the comment, a friend of Kate dismissed the claims as she called the Princess of Wales “a big hugger.”

They said: “She is warm and friendly and greets everyone with a big hug and kiss.

“It comes naturally to her to be like that.”

But footage from past engagements has shown the Princess of Wales does not normally shy away from hugging people, even when on public outings.

During a visit to the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (RCOG) in London in 2018, Kate broke away from her hosts after spotting Professor Jacqueline Dunkley-Bent in the crowd.

Prof Dunkley-Bent, who helped deliver Princess Charlotte three years earlier, exchanged a big hug with the royal and the pair chatted for a while before Kate resumed her duties.

The Duchess of Sussex had made clear her stance on hugging since before her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018, reiterating: “I’m American. I hug.”

A close friend of the Duchess at the time noted Meghan dispensed with royal protocol and frequently exchanged hugs to greet Palace staffers.

NBCUniversal cable network chief Bonnie Hammer said at the time: “The guards would greet her and walk her in.

“After the first couple of times. . . she started giving a hug to the guys, which wasn’t exactly protocol.

“And at some point, somebody said to her, ‘Well, people don’t really do that.’ She literally said, ‘I’m American. I hug’.”
