Met Office forecasts miserable wet and windy New Year

The Met Office forecasts a wet and windy weekend to start the New Year for many, with a rare amber alert issued for southwest Scotland. Friday is set to be particularly wet, with rain expected to move northeast across the UK.

Three yellow weather warnings have been issued in total – two for rain and one for snow and ice.

Around 40mm of rain is possible in some spots in Northern Ireland, and over 60mm could be seen throughout the day in Scotland.

A further amber warning has been put out for an area north of Carlisle, surrounding Dumfries, between 3am and 12pm tomorrow.

Up to 50mm of rain is expected to accumulate quite widely, with as much as 70mm possible in upland locations.

During the amber warning, the Met Office warned of multiple dangerous conditions, including “fast-flowing or deep floodwater” being likely, “causing danger to life.”

The organization goes on to state that “spray and flooding probably leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures” as being possible, as well as disruption to public transport, with “delays and some cancellations to train and bus services” being likely.

The Met Office also talks about how some homes and businesses are likely to be flooded and some rural communities could be cut off by flooding.
